Help the Public Learn About Bees!
FUN FOR EVERYONE!
There is NO CLUB MEETING in AUGUST, so tell your family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues to visit YOU at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair! (CLICK for general fair info)
MCBA Members can Volunteer to show fair-goers the wonders of honey bees. We have THREE very different venues at the fair, and each one gets amazing feedback from appreciative audiences: 'Wow - I didn't know bees did that!"
Please note ... volunteering for at least four hours at the County Fair is a requirement to sell honey or hive products on consignment at the Fair. Click here to see all the rules for HONEY CONSIGNMENT AT THE FAIR
(1) Bee Demonstrations - in the Gazebo behind Old MacDonald's Barn
While the audience stands safely outside our screened gazebo, you are inches away, wrangling 10's of thousands of bees! Wow them with your bravery as you open the hive boxes and show how the bees organize their home - 'nursery' below, and 'pantry' above. Explain how the a colony functions as one 'super organism', with workers, drones, and queen providing unique duties, without which the others could not survive. You'll explain how beekeepers keep colonies healthy with regular inspections and care; how and why bees make honey, how people harvest it, and why your love of bees far exceeds the discomfort of the not-so-infrequent sting. Bring your protective gear because this is full frontal beekeeping.
SHOW TIMES, BEE GAZEBO Saturday, Aug. 10 - Saturday, Aug. 17 1, 4 and 6pm; located in Farmer’s Triangle

(2) Honey Bee Education - in Old MacDonald’s Barn
Our booth in Old MacDonald's Barn is chock full of hands-on fun! Front and center is a glass hive with live bees! We also have bee models, quiz boards, and Tools of the Trade, like veils, gloves, smokers, etc. MCBA volunteer beekeepers explain it all - including how to find the elusive queen (a real-life 'Where's Waldo'), what the girl-bees do all day, and the lazy life of boy-bees.

(3) Local Honey Sales Booth - in Building #2 "Old Timers Building"
We sell MCBA Member's LOCAL honey and other "products of the hive" at a large booth inside building #2, Old Timers Building.
