TALK DESCRIPTION:

Every April, the Bee Informed Partnership, BIP, organizes an online Annual Loss and Management Survey through which beekeepers across the country report their practices and colony survival or losses of the past year. This survey has revealed interesting correlations between some practices and improved survival of colonies over the winter. Using grad students' sweat and tears, we field tested those recommended practices to see if they achieved success in the field. We found out success requires sweat and tears. We will present results from MD respondents in particular, to show you what are the most prevalent practices reported by MD beekeepers, and what changes you might want to try out in this new season.

BIOGRAPHY:

Nathalie Steinhauer, PhD

Dr Steinhauer is an entomologist specialized in questions related to honey bee health. Originally from Belgium where she completed a Master in Biology, and following a Master Research in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation from Imperial College London (UK), she graduated from University of Maryland and, since 2018, acts as the Research Coordinator for the Bee Informed Partnership. BIP is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving honey bee health, by bridging the gap between science and stakeholders, contributing to, and promoting research on honey bee health and beekeeping management practices. In particular, Nathalie collaborated in the production and analysis of BIP’s Annual Loss and Management Surveys (2013-present), and several other monitoring programs organized by BIP and UMD. Self-described R-enthusiast, and beekeeper since 2009.

FUN FACT: I say I can't cook but it's mostly laziness; I'm a Belgian who prefers ciders to beer, and chocolate to cider.
