EVENT DESCRIPTION:
Learn the ins and outs of swarm catching from DCBA's "Swarm Squad" member Toni Burnham:

  • Popular swarm catching gadgets
  • How to access a swarm for catch-ability
  • Creating a “go-kit” for beekeepers interested in catching swarms
  • Adventure stories from past Swarm Squad missions

Since 2014, DCBA has organized a group swarm response system called “The Swarm Squad” in order to offset one potential complication of the popularity of urban beekeeping: swarms landing where they aren’t wanted and freaking out the civilians. Using both internal and community social media channels, the Swarm Squad averages about 50 participants each year, covering every zip code in DC. Their response times average less than an hour, and they were declared Essential Workers during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown!

AGENDA:

6:30 pm ETNEW! Member Meet-up! Join Zoom before the meeting starts and you can talk with old friends, meet new friends, and have a good time. How it works: when you join the main room, you will see options to join breakout rooms. You can invite people to join you in one of those rooms, or you can dip in and out of conversations already happening in those rooms. It is purposely unstructured so you can socialize with fellow members. Give it a try and send your feedback to Phil Frank here.
7:00.pm.ET * Club Announcements from MCBA's President, Eric Malcolm
* Discussions and Q&A
