About Garett Slater:
Garett Slater is a PhD candidate at Purdue University and has 12 years of beekeeping experience, including 8 years of large commercial beekeeping experience in North Dakota. Garett’s current thesis work focuses on applying modern genetic tools to honey bee breeding. Applying genomic tools to beekeeping opens up many additional opportunities for beekeepers to select for difficult and time-consuming traits. A “23andMe” like genetic test for honey bees can be used to rapidly improve stocks and select for natural defenses against mites and diseases that impact honey bees. Prior to embarking on his doctorate degree, Garett completed a Masters on nutrition and queen quality at North Dakota State University. He also worked as a scientist and technician with the Bee Informed Partnership at the University of Minnesota for two years, where he worked directly with 30 commercial beekeepers in North Dakota.
Outside of Garett’s deep passion for bees his interests include traveling, watching Minnesota professional sports, and photography.
