EVENT DESCRIPTION
Making a New Queen for $20
Are you a 2nd or 3rd year beekeeper who wants to make some queens for your own use or a few to sell? Queen rearing isn’t that hard and you can do it for under $20 in new supplies. Learn some simple tips and tricks to make the whole process easier skipping a lot of trial and error. Participants will learn how to handle grafting tools, grafting preparation steps, making a graft, and taking grafts through to queendom.
SPEAKER BIO
Russell Sprangel started keeping bees in 2017, having received a hive setup and a new beekeeper’s course as a Christmas present from his wife Lisa -- which she totally regrets to this day. He is past VP and President of Carroll County Beekeepers Association and past Vice President of Howard County Beekeepers Association. Russell is an EAS Master Beekeeper, certificated in 2022. He teaches any and all aspects of beekeeping during the beekeeping calendar. In his second year of beekeeping he decided that queen rearing could not be the black magic everyone said, and that you did not need 10 years of experience to do it. So, with a little book learning, and no formal instruction, he jumped in to find what the fuss was about. Turns out it is magical, but in a good way, and can be one of the most rewarding aspects of beekeeping, even on the hobbyist scale.
