How to Consign Honey & Hive Products

MCBA's 2021 Consignment Rules and Pricing for the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair

PREREQUISITES to Consign Products with MCBA:

  1. All consigners must be an MCBA Member In Good Standing.
  2. All consignment suppliers are required to volunteer/work a minimum of 4-hours at one of the MCBA, Inc. sponsored display areas at this year's Montgomery County Fair. Check MCBA's homepage for links to sign up for specific roles and hours. If consignees are unable to volunteer, they must arrange for another MCBA member to work a 4-hour shift in their place. The volunteer must include this information when they sign up to volunteer. If the required volunteer hours are not worked by the consignee or their MCBA member substitute, the consignee’s sales reimbursement amount will be reduced by 50%.
  3. All consignment suppliers are required to enter honey or hive products for show in this year's Montgomery County Agricultural Fair. Ribbons and prize money may be awarded as appropriate.   4. All consignment suppliers must complete MCBA's Consignment Participation Form before August 5th.
    Note: You will need the following information to complete the form: (a) The days and locations you are scheduled to volunteer at the fair (see #3 above) (b) At least one of the Fair's contest categories you will enter (see #4 above) (c) The approximate number of pounds of honey you wish to consign (d) The non-honey products you wish to consign (if any).

RULES for Consigned Products:

  1. Each HONEY PRODUCT must be labeled according to MCBA's Honey Label Guidelines (CLICK HERE to see the labeling guidelines). "Honey Products" only include honey that is: liquid, creamed, comb, or chunk.
  2. Total weight of consigned honey products is 200 pounds per MCBA member.
  3. Each "NON-HONEY" Product (e.g. soaps, lip balms, creams, candles, etc.,) must conform to MCBA's "Non-Honey" product guidelines (CLICK HERE to see "Non-Honey" Consignment Rules).
  4. Products are accepted on a consignment basis only. All suppliers will be reimbursed for products sold no later than six weeks after the close of the fair.
  5. The MCBA, Inc., Fair Committee determines the final retail sales price of honey, which includes a 10% commission payable to MCBA, Inc. to cover MoCo Agricultural Fair operating expenses for the Club.
  6. The MCBA MoCo Fair Committee reserves the right to refuse any items not suitable for sale, such as items that have a poor appearance, crystallized honey, sticky jars, improperly filled jars, dirty items, and off flavor items. All honey placed on consignment will be tested for proper moisture content (a sample from each supplier will be tested by the show superintendent using a properly calibrated refractometer). All products must be suitably packaged to protect them from damage.
  7. The MCBA sells consigned honey without favoritism to type, variety, or supplier.

DEADLINES for Consigned Products and Show Entries

  1. All consignment products AND show entries must be delivered to the Farm and Garden Building Friday, Aug 13, 2021, 10 AM – 6 PM (the Friday before the fair opens), or Saturday, August 14, 8:30 AM – 2 PM (opening day of the fair) . Be sure to obtain a receipt for all items placed on consignment. MCBA, Inc. takes no responsibility for items left for consignment without a signed receipt.
  2. All UNSOLD items must be picked up by the supplier the day after the fair closesSunday, August 22, 2021 from 10 AM – 2 PM. Unless otherwise arranged, any items that are not picked up will become the property of MCBA, Inc. and/or will be donated to charity.

To compute your income from sell-by-weight items, multiply the number of ounces in your jar by price per ounce listed in the "Consignor Receives" column. Example 1: if you are selling 8 ounce jars of liquid honey, multiply 8 x .675 = $5.40 Example 2: if you are selling 12 ounce jars of honey, multiply 12 x .675 = $8.10
