Extraction Extravaganza

One Honey of a Time!!

ORGANIZED BY PATTI WONG!

MCBA EXTRACTION DAY – Sunday, JUNE 30, 2019

LOCATION: You cannot see the EXACT LOCATION info because you are not logged-in but it is near the intersection of Darnstown Road and Shady Grove Road.

EXACT LOCATION WILL APPEAR WHEN YOU ARE LOGGED IN.

TIME:   2 hour time slots from 8 AM until 5 PM

CONTACT:  Patti Wong cell phone 240-543-6224   email: PattiWong12@gmail.com

Please sign up for a time slot using this link to the SignUp Genius page. Include your contact information and number of frames you will be bringing.

I have allowed 2 hour timeslots, this should be sufficient for most folks. This event is more for small beekeepers who will have less than 3 supers to extract, or less than 30 frames.  Even if you only have one or two frames, I will have a 2 frame extractor available, so you will be welcome. I have 2 spaces for the 2 frame extractor per time slot, as you won’t need the full 2 hours.

LOCATION: You cannot see the link to sign up because you are not logged-in.

Non extracting volunteers are welcome for setup and clean up!  (And help me with mine, too.) See the SignUp link or email me.

PARKING:   I will send out a map of the campus. Unloading of supers can be done at the rear of the building which is the back door to the kitchen. Then you will have to park your vehicle in the Parking Garage, and the rate is $2 per hour.  Sorry, but, hey, I got the kitchen space for FREE. More info below on parking and unloading.

WHAT WILL BE SUPPLIED:

  • Extractors: I hope to have ( 2) two 4 frame, a 6 frame and a couple 2 frame extractors.
  • Uncapping tanks, bucket with a bucket buddy uncapping stand.
  • Uncapping knives, uncapping forks, uncapping roller
  • Refractometer – not sure if I can find one for that day.  Anyone that has one, please bring.

WHAT TO BRING:

  1. Supers ready to extract.  If you have frozen any, please allow up to 3 days for them to reach room temp.
  2. Make sure there is NO brood or larvae in any of your frames.  Only frames 75% - 100% capped should be extracted. Please drive out all bees, or be prepared to swat them upon arrival, so none get in the building.
  3. Bucket(s) for collection. Food grade buckets with lids - Don't let dust spoil your honey.   Bring at least one (1) 5 gallon bucket with lid for every 1 ½ supers.   I usually get 3 – 3.5 gallons per each 10 frame full super.
  4. A large kitchen wire strainer – this will filter out a great deal of the wax from the extractor.  A fine mesh strainer can be used at home for further filtering as it will take too much time and will hold up the process for others.  Leave all bottles and labels at home.
  5. Bucket or container for wax cappings, if you want to keep them.  I will gladly take them if you don’t want them. If you want to keep yours, you may want to bring a filtering net.
  6. Clean towels – 1 or 2.
  7. A helper.  Please bring someone to help with either uncapping or cranking the extractor.  The process goes much faster with help.

DO’s and DON’Ts:

  • Don’t bring any bottles or jars to collect honey. Further filtering and bottling can be done at home, after the honey settles.
  • Don’t forget to bring collection buckets.  There is a Home Depot nearby, not sure if Food Grade. Walmart carries them, but sometimes not the lids. Best to order online.
  • Do  consider bringing a bucket for collection with a gate value.  Make sure it is closed, before collection.
  • Do clear out all bees from supers.  Clear out all hive beetles, too.
  • Do wear clean clothes, and have very clean shoes – the extracting space needs to be kept clean.
  • Don’t bring small kids unless well supervised, this a workday, not a playday.  ( I do love kids!)
  • Do label any tools and buckets you bring.  Very important.
