Knowing how to use a honey refractometer is a basic beekeeper’s skill. The moisture content of honey should be 17.8% or less. Bees cap honey when sufficient moisture has been removed, BUT beekeepers often harvest frames with many uncapped cells or store extracted honey in excessively humid rooms. A check of that honey may reveal a moisture content that is higher than acceptable. That honey will ferment over time due to yeasts in the honey, making it unusable.
In this hands-on, one-hour training, participants will learn how to correctly calibrate and use a honey refractometer.
