AGENDA:

6:30 pm ETNEW! Member Meet-up! Join Zoom before the meeting starts and you can talk with old friends, meet new friends, and have a good time. How it works: when you join the main room, you will see options to join breakout rooms. You can invite people to join you in one of those rooms, or you can dip in and out of conversations already happening in those rooms. It is purposely unstructured so you can socialize with fellow members. Give it a try and send your feedback to Phil Frank here.

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

Dr. vanEngelsdorp will focus on:

  • Are bees pets or livestock and does the difference matter in terms of standards of care?
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • What's it like to be a bee?
  • Varroa control
  • How can we care for bees in Maryland, both our own and our neighbor's?

Dennis vanEngelsdorp Bio

Dennis vanEngelsdorp leads the University of Maryland Bee Lab and is an Associate Professor in the UMD Department of Entomology. His research focuses on pollinator health, and is particularly intrigued with using an epidemiological approach to understanding and improving honey bee health. This approach is multi-faceted, requiring understanding both the etiology (causes) of individual bee diseases and the large scale monitoring of colony health.

Dennis is widely published and his TED talk, "a plea for bees" has been viewed 800,000 times -- see below and make it 800,001 views!

FUN FACTS: In his spare time Dr vanEngelsdorp loves to garden and considers himself "stereotypical Dutchman."
